Signes and Traces

The Signes et Traces group was born at the Comparisons fair in 1998 around Riccardo Licata, inventor of a personal plastic alphabet, always renewed, available in multiple richly colored variations.
In 1943, Matisse wrote to Aragon: “the importance of an artist is measured by the quantity of new signs that he will have introduced into the plastic language”.
The terms “Signs and Traces” are complementary, one generating the other and vice versa, in a permanent game whose sources are, for the painter: experience, perception, feeling. Traces of a past for a trace in the future – capture and projection.
The Signes et Traces group strives to create coherence by bringing together artists around these values, in the exploration of the infinite possibilities of creation, the uniqueness of each person and diversity.
